Hello everyone...

Recently purchased a used 2003 Mini Cooper-S... WOW ! what a fun car to drive...

The car is just our side warranty...

When the car in cold and driving off in first gear there is a noise below 1500/2000 rpm ?.

To me it's sounds like the thrust bearing ?.

A friend of mine has a Mini Cooper with a 5speed box, he also has had the same noise. He took the car back to BMW, they said "that's what Mini's do !". I think that's a bullshit answer to be honest !

After some months he took the car back, BWM finally said yes it's the gear box problem ($5000 to fix), it just happend to be when the car was outside it's warranty. My friend took it to another mechanic (european specialist), this guy said NO it's a spacific part and fixed it ($1500).

I was wondering if anyone else has reported this problem ? and any reported fixes ?

Strange, Cooper S gearboxes tend to be pretty reliable. Now cooper boxes did have gearbox problems (different manufacturers). What sort of noise is it? Try taking it to that euro specialist and see what he thinks

Thanks for the reply straff...

The euro guy is in sydney that helped my friend out with the cooper... I'll have to find a good one in Perth, however i'm glad you pointed out that the two boxes are made by different manufactures. We're picking up the car today from BMW as we took it back to get it checked out, so I will report back with what they have to say.

Maybe a chat with the manager or a letter to someone higher up is in order if they are putting off potential warranty probs like that....Good luck i hope its nothing serious.

The service guy actually wasn't lying to you.  Mine has been doing that since it was 1,000 miles old with no ill effects.

As the saying goes "It's what makes a MINI a MINI, you paid extra for it."

I have this same noise. Started around 20,000 miles. Only happens when cold. I now am approaching 80,000 miles and clutch is doing great. Took it into dealer while under warranty and was told that this is common noise for the Mini. Even have it in writing from the dealer.
