Maybe that's old school terms? I haven't liked cars for long (about two years) but I've always heard it called a BOV...?

Actually BOV=Blow Off Valve and Bypass Valves are TWO TOTALLY DIFFERENT things.

Well, then that makes sense, care to explain a little bit the difference? I'm curious to know.

Blow Off Valves are required when using a turbo to ris the engine of excess Vaccuum that could dangerously destroy your engine. Bypass Valve is used to help direct vacuum/boost to where the engine needs it most. All Mini Cooper S' have Bypass Valves.

hmm, this must be a MINI thing, because i have commonly read people referring to a BOV as a bypass valve. for instance, when i worked for dodge, the sRT4 doesnt have a stock blow off valve, but it has a bypass valve, which serves the same purpose as the bov, but is a very different setup. also, BOVs arent required, per se, but it is MUCH better for the turbocharger to have one. Some older turbo cars didnt come with BOVs (mine for instance) and allow the boost to back up, or "stack". "Stacking" actually forces the pressure to back up, through the compressor side thus slowing down the compressor wheel (and over time, damaging it)
